11 QUESTIONS WITH DOUG BROWN, DIRECTOR and CREATOR of SLAVE TO THE GRIND
Where are you from? Toronto, Canada 2. What do you think about chaos magic? I like Chaos. Not Magic. 3. When and why did you start filming? Our fist film shoot was April 19th 2014. As for why…-I was actually at a Lock Up concert when the idea hit me. I was watching Nick Barker play the drums and I was thinking about how I wished there was a documentary on the subject. In many ways Lock Up are not pure grind, since they have many black metal elements to their sound - and me nerding out over these details in my head made me realize there was a need for a film on the topic. I suppose that was where the first ‘plant’ in my head was. 4. What was your first theater and/or show experience? That I went to? I suppose the first time I went to a show was seeing Metallica in 1997. 5. How did you get into the genre(s)? I got into grind though a relapse sampler I bought 18 or 19 years ago. It had a track by Soilent Green on it (It was just an accident). Though they are not pure grind, it was the blasting on it that I enjoyed. I didn’t know it was grindcore..I also didn’t know Napalm Death was a grindcore band, as I only owned Fear, Emptiness, Despair - which is more of a death metal album than a grind album. Once I realized that I dug the blasts and there was this thing called grind - I went back and heard Napalm’s From Enslavement To Obliteration. I have not looked back since! 6. Three biggest influences? Music : Metallica, David Bowie, and Tower of Power. Film: Paul Thomas Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, John Carpenter 7. How do you feel about the current state of the community or communities you’re apart of? I love the Toronto Grind community Shout out to Truth Of All Death, Beggin For Oxys, Fuck Bud, Acid Shower, and unfortunately defunct Homolka. I also work at a school in Toronto that has some of the best educators and colleagues I could ask for. For a community of lifelong learners, I couldn’t ask for better people to work with! 8. What are some of your favorite new bands/artists/directors etc..? Denis Villeneuve is currently my favourite newer director. Sulphuric Cautery is a band that needs to be taken seriously - certainly one of the best new comers. 9. What is an unforgettable memory you recall from being on tour? Getting pummelled in the head with corn on the cob when filming Haemorrhage. 10. Three Favorite places to eat in the US and/or Canada? The Alma Fish Hut in the Bay of Fundy, Johnny Hamburgers in Toronto, and At my house - I generally like eating at home. 11. If you had to write your own eulogy, what would it be? Goddamn. Doug is dead. Can you believe THAT is how he died?
